Falcon boys finish second at home track meet

WEST BRANCH — Ogemaw Heights and Standish-Sterling went toe-to-toe again Friday at the Falcon Team Invitational, and once again the Panthers narrowly finished ahead of the Falcons.

Gaylord, however, trumped everyone, running up 534 points to second-place SSC's 509. Ogemaw followed with 501, with Cadillac (442), Gladwin (343) and John Glenn (158) rounding out the large school field.

In team scoring the top finisher earns 30 points, with second place taking 29 and so on down through 30 places. Six other teams also participated in the small school division, with events run together but scored separately.

Standish-Sterling got wins from Cole Walderzak in the discus (149-2) and high jump (5-8) as well as a second-place finish in the shot put (50-1). Trent Fouchey won the 100 (11.76) and took second in the 200 (23.48) while Casey Potts claimed the 300 hurdles (41.82) and third in the 200 (24.10). Kevin Reeves' fourth-place finish in the 200 made it three of the top four spots for the Panthers.

The SSC sprint relays also had a strong outing, with James Bashor, Potts, Fouchey, and Reeves winning the 4x100 (45.18) and Fouchey, Mitchell McFarland, Potts, and Reeves taking the 4x200 (1:34.10). McFarland also took second in the long jump (18-11.5) and fifth in the 100 while Reeves was also third in the 100. Shay Irving took second in the 800 (2:09.86).

For Ogemaw winners were Anthony Zettel in the shot put (52-0) and Martin Nelkie in the 3200 (10:09.95).

Zettel also took second in the discus (136-0), with Kenneth Larsen taking third (129-0); Mike Lentz, Nelkie, Garret Benjamin and Brian Valley took second in the 4x800 (8:55.23); Andrew Arbour was third in the high jump (5-6); Ronnie Trower was second in the 110 hurdles (17.16); and third in the 300 hurdles (44.84); Jay Boycott, Larsen, Kyle Bellor, and Aaron Dougherty took third in the 4x100 relay (46.73); Lentz was third in the 800 (2:09.92); and Trower, Dougherty, James WIlliams and Lentz were third in the 4x400 (3:46.80).

That James Williams of the Falcons runs like the wind. He will be fun to watch for the next couple of years since he is only a Freshman.
