W-P to compete at the MITCA team track finals
GOBLES — Whittemore-Prescott’s boys track team earned the right to compete at the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association team track finals on Saturday and finished ninth out of 13 of the top Division 4 track squads in the state.
The MITCA meet utilizes full-team scoring, unlike the MHSAA meet, which only scores individual state qualifiers. MHSAA team regional champions are invited to the meet, as well as a number of the top runner-up squads. W-P, which finished second at the Breckenridge regional meet on May 16, earned an at-large berth.
Sand Creek won the meet with 1,073 points over Traverse City St. Francis (1,046.5) and perennial MHSAA meet champion Potterville (1,014.50). The Cards finished with 689.5 points.
Top finishers for Whittemore-Prescott were Billy Raushi in the long jump (1st, 21-0), high jump (2nd, 6-2) and 110 hurdles (2nd, 15.44); Matt Ackerman in the 100 (11.65) and 20 (1st, 23.38); Sean Stevenson in the discus (15th, 108-9.9); Tadd DeCaen in the shot put (12th, 40-1.5); Brady Smallwood in the 1600 (21st, 5:05.14); Gregory Lomason in the 300 hurdles (21st, 46.651); Casey Popielarz in the 800 (27th, 2:18.74); Cody Foreman in the 200 (4th, 23.81); Lukas Earl in the 200 (16th, 24.85); Scott Garnett in the 3200 (10th, 11:11.87).
Relay results were not immediately available, but the Cards had the fifth-most points scored by their relay teams of the competing schools.
Hale finishes fifth at Northstar League championship meet
FAIRVIEW — AuGres-Sims’ boys track and field team looked as though it would have a three-way battle on its hands heading into last Thursday’s North Star League championship meet.
Instead, the Wolverines put things away early, building a big enough lead that a late charge by Hillman only pulled the Tigers to within 19 points. AGS won its second straight league championship — and third in four years — with 135 points to Hillman’s 116, followed by Mio (104), Fairview (57), Hale (55), Atlanta (34) and Posen (26).
Hale’s lone winner was Devin Leidecker in the 400 (53.67), with Christian Mudry taking second in the high jump (6-0) and Mudry, Nick Katterman, Nate Turland and Leidecker finishing second in the 4x400 (3:46.68).
