UPDATED: Nelkie wins regional cross country crown

A spectator got in the way of this photo but not Martin Nelkie as the Ogemaw Heights senior standout went on to win the Division 2 cross-country regional crown at Delta College Saturday, Oct. 31.

UNIVERSITY CENTER — Ogemaw Heights' Martin Nelkie claimed the Division 2 individual regional cross country title Saturday, Oct. 31, at Delta College, where he crossed the line first in 16:35.1.
Nelkie also led the OHHS boys team to a berth in the state meet as the Falcons placed third.
The top three teams and top 15 individual finishers qualify for the state meet.
Following Nelkie in order of finish for the Falcons were Brian Valley, Casey Taylor, Steven Wysocki and George Farmer.
Valley crossed the line eighth in 17:27.5, Taylor finished 18th in 17:49.7, Wysocki placed 27th in 18:16.8, while Farmer finished 46th in 18:56.
In the girls Division 2 race, OHHS finished 10th. Cheyenne St. Andrew led the Falcons' effort by placing 40th in 22:25.
