UPDATED: Nelkie medals at cross-country state finals

Ogemaw Heights' Martin Nelkie runs the course set up on the infield at Michigan International Speedway

BROOKLYN -- Ogemaw Heights senior standout Martin Nelkie closed his prep career in fine fashion by finishing 10th in the Division 2 boys' cross-country state finals Saturday, Nov. 7 on the grounds at the Michigan International Speedway.

Nelkie fell early in the race but picked himself up and still got to the finish line in 16:17.9.

Only the top 15 finishers earn medals. There were 240 runners in the race.

Christopher Burns of Pontiac Notre Dame won the individual state title, crossing the line first in 15:47.

The OHHS team finished 21st in the team standings with 485 points. Iona won the team title with 92 points.

Following Nelkie in order of finish for OHHS were: Steven Wysocki, 148th, 17:49.4; Brian Valley, 151st, 17:50.0, Casey Taylor, 171st, 18:01.9), Bob Brent, 222nd, 19:03.5.

In the Division 4 girls race, Hale's Lauren Brown finished 89th in 22:02.6, while Kelsey Scott placed 153rd in 23:11.1.

There were 230 runners in the race.
