Elected officials should not accept raises

Over the past few weeks, several local governments have been considering whether or not to give the elected officials sitting on their boards a raise. At this time, a raise for elected officials is a bad idea.

With the current state of our economy in Michigan, people everywhere are struggling just to pay their bills each month. Many people are without jobs, and unable to find new ones.

And the economic downturn has also been affecting our government. Everywhere from school districts, to township boards, to county boards, to the state level, cuts are being made. Programs are being eliminated left and right, and some areas of government are struggling to survive right along with their residents.

The last thing we need right now are our local politicians accepting raises.

If the local government has the money in the budget to afford to give its elected officials raises, then wouldn’t it be smarter to use that money for something that will better benefit the people that it serves?

We applaud any government that has extra money in its budget during this tough economic time, but giving that money to the elected officials would not be fiscally responsible.

Think there was a point to be made here, but did anyone edit or even proofread this? The last word, probably should read "irresponsible" based on the overall tone. Secondly, at the local level at least, "government" and "elected officials" generally are one and the same, so suggesting that 'THEY' might "accept" additional remuneration from some other worldly source of power beyond themselves simply misses the point altogether.

Wow, dude. Were you drunk when you posted that comment? You don't make a lot of sense. Also, watch your comma placement before you criticize someone else's alleged lack of proofreading.

So sorry, obviously over your head, dude!

Fortunately, someone DID change it to read "not fiscally responsible" by the time you read my post, but the fact remains that "elected officials" vote on their own salaries, dude, they don't "receive" or "accept" them from anyone but themselves.
