Midland man dies in one-car accident

A Midland man was pronounced dead after his truck went off the roadway and struck several trees before coming to a stop.

CUMMING TWP. — A Midland man was killed in a one car accident on M-33 July 30.

According to Ogemaw County Sheriff’s Deputy J.C. Schneider, James Mertens, 66, veered off the road into a row of pine trees near Sage Lake Road.

Mertens was traveling southbound in a red Chevrolet Colorado pulling a camper at the time of the incident. He was pronounced dead after being transported via ambulance to West Branch Regional Medical Center. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

According to Sgt. Robert Cappell, Mertens had a medical condition which may have caused the accident. Any injuries he received during the crash did not cause his death.

D & N Towing cleared the scene. Ogemaw County EMS, the Rose City Fire Department and Michigan State Police assisted at the scene.

The accident was reported at 11:57 a.m.
