Police investigating homicide following standoff and arrest

OGEMAW COUNTY — The Ogemaw County Sheriff’s Department and Michigan State Police are investigating a homicide in Mills Township allegedly linked to the arrest of an unnamed man who was allegedly a parole absconder after a short standoff at the Super 8 Motel in West Branch Feb. 4.

The victim was a 57-year-old man from Mills Township. The alleged suspect was a 49-year-old from Genesee County.

According to Sheriff Howie Hanft, a search warrant was executed and an unidentified body was found at a residence on Rifle River Trail in Mills Township.

Hanft said the department received a tip from an anonymous source that a person staying at the motel had reportedly boasted of recently getting out of prison and committing murder.

Hanft said deputies investigated the claim by attempting to make contact with the alleged suspect at his room in the motel. The suspect refused to open the door and told deputies to leave. When the suspect refused to respond, Hanft said he activated the Northern Michigan Response Team.

With the assistance of multiple agencies, officers were reportedly able to secure the scene and make contact over the telephone with the suspect. When the suspect stopped responding, Hanft said officers breached his room and found the suspect alive and bleeding out after allegedly attempting to take his own life.

The man was apprehended and transported by ambulance to West Branch Regional Medical Center and later airlifted to Ascension Health Care in Saginaw, according to Hanft.

According to sheriff’s department Det. Dave Stahl, Jr., the man is currently in stable condition.

Hanft said multiple search warrants were being executed in the Skidway Lake area Feb. 4 and the situation is still under investigation.
