OGEMAW COUNTY — There were no major injuries reported in a accident involving a car and a train at the intersection of Old M-76 and Rau Road Aug. 30.
Ogemaw County Sheriff Howie Hanft said the incident involved two Prescott residents who were traveling in a Chevy Lumina down Rau Road when their car was hit by the engine of a passing train at the intersection, but no major injuries occurred.
Hanft said the person driving the car was an elderly woman, and said she said she didn’t think the train was coming.
“Several of the witnesses we talked with said the driver was driving up to the train track and just didn’t stop,” Hanft said. “The driver said she just didn’t think trains went through that intersection anymore, so she tried to drive through and ended up getting the rear of the car clipped by the train.”
Hanft said the driver and her passenger refused medical treatment following the accident.
“They were extremely lucky to make it out of there with no injuries,” Hanft said.
The name of the driver and the passenger have not been released yet.
The Ogemaw County Sheriff’s Department and Ogemaw County EMS responded to the accident.
