RICHLAND TWP. — Richland Township will hold its second annual 3K or 5K run/walk starting at the Richland Township Hall Sept. 3.
“It’s a community event to try to get people to get up and exercise,” said Richland Township Treasurer and event organizer Deborah Burton.
Burton said she got the idea from other townships in the state that hold run/walk events on Labor Day to give people an alternative from the Mackinac Bridge walk.
“I thought it was a good idea,” Burton said.
The event is free for participants, but Burton said donations will be accepted.
“It’s all done by donations,” she said. “To participate there is no charge. We will have donations out for the (library repair fund).”
She said there will also be a money raffle during the event to raise money for the library repair fund. Burton has been raising money for repairs to the Ogemaw East Branch Prescott Library.
Burton said 33 people registered and participated in last year’s event.
“We’re hoping for more this year,” she said.
She said health snacks will be provided for participants following the race.
“For those that can’t participate in the run/walk — there were a few last year — I’m going to try my hand with teaching them line dancing at the hall,” Burton said.
This year, Burton said they also added a stroller walk, because people commented last year that the dirt roads were a challenge for strollers. She said there will be a pavement-only portion for those.
Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Richland Township Hall, with the run/walk starting at 10 a.m. The run/walk will begin and end at the hall.
“We hope everyone comes out,” Burton said. “It looks like it’s hopefully going to be a nice day.”
