WEST BRANCH — St. Joseph School will host the Run the Nightmare 5K Run/Walk fundraiser Oct. 27 to help provide scholarships for students.

According to Heather Chrouch, a parent volunteer for the event, the run/walk will be held at The Nightmare golf course at 5745 W. M-76 in West Branch, with both the run and the walk starting at 9 a.m. that day.

For both the race and the walk, Chrouch said instead of splitting everyone up into different divisions based on gender or age, she said the top three timed finishers in each event will receive prizes, with every participant taking home a pumpkin.

“This is an all-ages event,” Chrouch said. “You can compete by yourself or even as a team. We’ve even had track teams from the local schools compete in past years.”

For the route of both the run and the walk, Chrouch said participants will be running and walking throughout the whole golf course.

She said last year, more than 70 people participated in the run/walk.

As a Halloween-based event, Chrouch said everyone is encouraged to dress up in a costume to give the event a holiday flair. She said people are not required to be in costume, though.

She said there will be a prize awarded for the best costume following the run/walk.

In addition to the walk/run and prizes, Chrouch said Cub Scouts from Troop No. 3975 will be selling popcorn at the event.

Chrouch said you can either register in person at the school, go to the school’s website and register online, or register from 8-8:45 a.m. the day of the race.

Registration with a T-shirt costs $26 and registration without a shirt costs $20. Chrouch said people who wanted T-shirts should have signed up by Oct. 22 to guarantee a shirt can be ordered.

Chrouch said the proceeds from the event will go to a scholarship fund for students and their parents who need help with paying tuition.

“These fundraisers are why kids can get tuition scholarships,” Chrouch said.

She said both of her children attend the school, noting that it costs close to $3,600 a year per student in tuition.

For more information or to register, stop by the school at 935 W. Houghton Ave. or visit www.wbstjoseph.com or www.goracego.com/register/?event=14983.
