City council might start holding meetings at other locations

Reschedules first September meeting

WEST BRANCH — City council members were asked to suggest other locations where meetings might be held occasionally instead of City Hall during the July 5 council meeting.

The idea had been broached at the city’s meeting June 27 by City Manager Heather Grace, when she suggested the city could hold a dedication ceremony for the new firemen’s memorial on Houghton Avenue.

“We could move the council meeting to other locations,” Grace said during the June meeting. “We could have one meeting at the Irons Park pavilion, one at the city police station, one at the wastewater treatment plant. It’d be an opportunity for the council members and the public to see other areas of the city. We could maybe do themes around those meetings.”

Grace was absent from the July 5 meeting, but the item was on the agenda to ask council members for possible locations.

No decisions were made on the issue, but council members agreed they liked the idea of those particular locations that had been suggested previously. The West Branch Community Airport and the Ogemaw Fire Department were also suggested as possible locations.

In other business, the city council voted unanimously to change the city’s first meeting date for September to Tuesday, Sept. 5, at 6 p.m. due to Labor Day.
