Collegiate athletes coach area wrestlers at second annual camp

WEST BRANCH — The second annual Rifle River Wrestling Camp, a three-day gathering of area wrestlers ages 9-18, coaches and collegiate grapplers, was in full swing at Ogemaw Heights High School June 17.

Volunteer assistant Matt Wynkoop said the 22 wrestlers representing Ogemaw Heights High School, Roscommon High School, Mio AuSable High School, Mid-Michigan Grapplers, the Whittemore-Prescott youth wrestling team and Ogemaw Bulldogs youth wrestling club gain around 18 hours of experience throughout the three days.

They are led by Cleveland State University wrestlers Nathan Wynkoop, Jayce Carr, Xavier Dye and John Martin.

“They learn the basic moves, but they learn some of the finer details that the college guys learn — those finer details that make a move or a skill that much more effective,” Wynkoop said. “We’re hoping that it will grow into some sort of tradition. It’s an opportunity that a lot of kids don’t have.”
