Community invited to Rose City Park for bonfire and chili cook-off

ROSE CITY — An opportunity for gathering together as a community is in order at Rose City Park, where the fifth annual bonfire and chili cook-off will be held March 3.

Deputy Clerk Shelley Maleski said in its first year, the event was held at Mill Pond after that area was cleared out and a large amount of brush was left over, which was ideal for a bonfire. Since then it has been held at the city park, where a sledding hill provides an additional activity.

If there is snow — none is in the forecast thus far — visitors may sled down the hill and take a hayride back to the top.

Both individuals and businesses may register for the chili cook-off at 11 a.m.

“Last year we had all the restaurants in town including out to Lupton ... participate,” Downtown Development Authority Secretary Theresa Erickson said.

Judging will begin at noon, when the bonfire event will kick off. Prizes will include a $50, $30 and $20 gift card for first, second and third place, respectively.

Attendees will also be able to enjoy free hot dogs, chips, cookies and hot cocoa.

If the bonfire or hot cocoa isn’t sufficient, the pavilion will have heaters to warm people up.

Along with the Rose City DDA, several local businesses are sponsoring the event.

“We have good participation,” Clerk Cindy Rosebrugh said. “They’re generous to us.”

Erickson said it’s an excellent opportunity to visit with fellow community members.

“It’s enjoyable, you can talk to a lot of the people in the community, it’s a good time, it’s free,” she said. “It’s just nice to visit with friends, family and the community.”

Both Erickson and Rosebrugh said the city has a great park and the event is a good way to show it off.

“We’re just trying to make our park better for people and the kids and our events better for people,” Rosebrugh said.

The event runs from noon to 4 p.m.
