And then it was summer

I lost count of the articles I read in the last two weeks which called Memorial Day the unofficial start of summer. Apparently, the natural world got the memo; summer-like weather arrived, bang on cue, just in time for the three-day holiday weekend. It feels like summer, and it looks like summer, although the calendar says otherwise. I looked through the screen door as I was writing this and I saw a chicken, a rabbit and a number of songbirds stopping by for treats. The hanging baskets are bursting with wave petunias. The meadow is bright green and the woods beyond are lush and verdant.
