Caryl Jean (Furlong) Shirey, 91, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019, at her home in West Branch with her family by her side.

Caryl was born Aug. 5, 1928, in Detroit, the daughter of Donald and Pearl (Dennison) Furlong. She lived in Royal Oak, Southfield and Berkley before moving to West Branch in 2004. She was one of the last “number please” phone operators for Michigan Bell. She worked for Consumers Energy as a switchboard operator in the “Miss Dig” department. She retired from Consumers Energy in 1990.

Caryl is survived by her children, Patti (Greg) DeMatio, Jim (Kathy) Shirey, both of West Branch, and Barbara Shirey of San Diego, Calif.; six grandchildren, Crystal Shirey, Antoinette (Edwardo) Salas, Lee (Kellie) Shirey, Jason Shirey, Ashley (Collin) Krzeminski and Nathan DeMatio; 12 great-grandchildren, Isabella, Silas, Zered, Maddox, Antonio, Zoey, Jaden, Naomi, Jude, Faith, Austin and Makenna; great-great-nephew, Lucas; two great-great-nieces, Addison and Briella; many nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Sara Furlong; special brother-in-law, David Shirey and his wife Terry; and special sister-in-law, Judy Barnett and husband Jim.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, JoAnn Marie; son, Michael Roy; and brother, James Furlong.

She enjoyed crossword puzzles, word seek puzzles, reading the newspaper and comedy.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial visitation at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch will be held Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019, from 3-7 p.m.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army or the Ogemaw County Humane Society.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank the nurses at MidMichigan Hospice Home Care for the excellent care provided to Mom.
