Eileen A. Ulicny

Died May 6, 2018


Eileen A. Ulicny, 87, of Ray Township passed away May 6, 2018, at The Brook Retirement Community in West Branch with her family by her side.

She was born Oct. 4, 1930, in Havre Boucher, Nova Scotia, Canada, to the late Andrew and Bertha DeCoste. Eileen enjoyed telling the story of how she left Nova Scotia and came to the United States when she was 16 years old by using a lantern to flag down the train. She retired from Ford Motor Company. She enjoyed bowling, gardening and farming, but her favorite pastime was visiting with her large family and many friends, listening to music and throwing barn parties down on the family farm.

She volunteered at William Beaumont Hospital, Meals on Wheels and the Lions Club. She was always helping others, cooking, baking, taking the sick and elderly to doctor appointments and ministering to those in need. She also wintered in Largo, Fla., the past 13 years, spending time with many Canadian relatives, family members and friends. She was actively involved in the Pointe West Park community.

Eileen is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Geralyn (Dennis) Kogelman; daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn (Bill) Schenk; son and daughter-in-law, Frank (Dianne) Ulicny; daughter and son-in-law, Judith (Marius) Gutes; son, Joseph Ulicny; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen (Charyl) Ulicny; son-in-law, Barry Haley; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; companion, John Zedick of Largo, Fla.; sister, Muriel Amirault; sister-in-law, Jacquelin DeCoste; brother-in-law, Francis DeCoste; sister-in-law, Louise DeCoste; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; daughter, Therese Haley; brother and sister-in-law, Leonard (Hazel) DeCoste; brother and sister-in-law, Elmer (Margaret) DeCoste; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret (Leo) Kemp; brother, Ernest DeCoste; brother, Richard DeCoste; sister, Evelyn DeCoste; and brother, Curtis DeCoste.

Visitation hours will be held Friday, May 18, from 4-8 p.m., at the Jowett Funeral Home, 57737 Gratiot, New Haven. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church, 58801 Main St., New Haven, with visitation starting at 10 a.m. Sons-in-law William Schenk and Barry Haley will be officiating. Entombment will be at Christian Memorial Cultural Center Cemetery in Rochester Hills. Pallbearers will be Frank Ulicny, Joe Ulicny, Steve Ulicny, Marius Gutes, Barry Haley, Dennis Kogelman, William Schenk and Mark Skiba.
