Field of Flags held at Tolfree Wellness Park

There was a large crowd of people, including the Ogemaw County Veterans, for a flag dedication and tribute. The crowd was also present for the opening of the Veteran’s Waterfall Garden and for Pat’s Pooch Park at Tolfree Wellness Park Saturday, July 28.

The flag dedication was a tribute for Robert A. McGrail of the U.S. Army. McGrail’s son, Bob, the President of MidMichigan Medical Center -West Branch, gave a speech to the crowd as he received the flag.

The Veteran’s Waterfall Garden is in memory of U.S. Navy Veteran Raymond Van Goethem. Van Goethem’s son, Ray, and grandson, Cody, spoke to the crowd and thanked everyone.

“He loved water, but he hated to swim,” Ray said with a laugh.

Pat’s Pooch Park is in memory of Patricia Wiegerink and in honor of Captain Lloyd Wiegerink. Chairman of MidMichigan Medical Center- West Branch Dan Stoneback said it’s also important to honor military dogs.

Many people in the crowd also brought their dogs for the opening.

The crowd carried flags in honor of veterans and placed them in the ground, showing respect and patriotism, and took a moment of silence to honor those who have fallen.
