Health center to host annual Health and Wellness Fair

STERLING — Sterling Area Health Center is showing its appreciation to the community by offering a day of fun coupled with health awareness at its annual Health and Wellness Fair Aug. 8.

The fair is being hosted as part of National Health Center Week, Aug. 4-10.

“This is an annual celebration raising awareness for the mission and accomplishments of America’s health centers,” SAHC CEO George Olson said.

More specifically, the day is to celebrate the center’s relationship with the local community, with this year’s theme being “Rooted in our communities.”

“We’re here for our patients; we’re here for our community,” Olson said, noting that SAHC is a “safety net organization” that provides health care to people regardless of their ability to pay.

He said the event will include things for the whole family, including kids activities such as face painting, balloon twisting, a petting zoo and more. Backpacks and more will be given away, and a bicycle will be raffled off. In addition, the event will have several health opportunities such as blood pressure checks, dental screenings and vision checks, along with the presentation of health information and information about what services the center provides. Forty-five vendors will be present.

There will also be a free lunch and snacks, and a mobile food pantry will be on hand.

Olson said nationwide, 28 million patients a year get their primary care from community health centers or federally qualified health centers such as SAHC. He said a federally qualified health center has specific qualities, including nonprofit status and board members who are patients. SAHC is the only FQHC in Arenac County, and one of two in Ogemaw County.

The event runs from 2-5 p.m. at the Deep River Township Hall, 525 E. State St., Sterling. It is free and open to the public, regardless of whether they are a patient or not.
