Shop with a Cop seeking donations and assistance

WEST BRANCH — Ogemaw County Sheriff Howie Hanft said enough money has been raised for approximately 80 children to participate in the Shop with a Cop event on Wednesday, Dec. 11 but there are just as many on a waiting list.

Last year’s event served around 50-60 children, and the program is doing what it can to meet the increased need this year not only with donations, but with personnel as well. Hanft said his department is reaching out to other law enforcement agencies, as well as the Coast Guard and area fire departments, to ensure each child has someone to shop with.

“We’d like as many policemen there as we can,” Hanft said. “We’re looking for any help we can get.”

Even so, Hanft said the program is still seeking donations to serve as many of the kids on the waiting list as possible. He said the program is setting aside $100 for each child participating in the event.

Those interested in making a donation can contact the sheriff’s department at 989-345-3111.
