Two airlifted following multi-vehicle crash

PLAINFIELD TWP. — Two people were airlifted to the hospital after a crash occurred between three vehicles July 9.

According to the Michigan State Police, at approximately 12:30 p.m. troopers were dispatched to M-65 south of Rollways Road for a three-vehicle personal injury accident.

Investigation into the situation revealed a 1996 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a 44-year-old Tawas City man was traveling eastbound on M-65 when it reportedly crossed the centerline of the roadway and entered the westbound lane. Upon reentering the correct lane, the Chevrolet reportedly sideswiped a 1993 Jeep Wrangler, driven by a 67-year-old Pinconning man. The pickup then reportedly crossed the centerline again and collided with an oncoming 2016 Chevrolet pickup that was occupied by a 64-year-old man from Metamora and his 11-year-old grandson.

According to the MSP, both drivers of the pickup trucks were entrapped in the vehicle, requiring extrication by the Plainfield Township Fire Department. Both the 44-year-old and the 64-year-old male drivers were seriously injured in the accident and were airlifted to separate hospitals for treatment.

The 11-year-old child and the driver of the Jeep were uninjured in the crash. M-65 was closed to traffic for approximately five hours during the investigation.

The crash remains under investigation by troopers from the West Branch Post.

According to the MSP, troopers were assisted at the scene by the Iosco County Sheriff’s Office, Iosco EMS, the Plainfield Township Fire Department, and the MSP 3rd District Traffic Crash Reconstructionist. MSP Aviation also assisted by providing aerial mapping and photography using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
