Two arrested in Crawford County for human trafficking

CRAWFORD COUNTY — Two men were arrested in Crawford County Friday, Jan. 10 after a woman arrested for stealing a vehicle alleged she escaped from a residence on Roberta Drive in Crawford County where she was being forced to clean the residence and perform acts of prostitution.

According to the Michigan State Police, the victim stated she was being held against her will by James Manford Jarrell, 50, and Jeffrey Allen Kobel, 50, of Roscommon, and that she had been brought north from Ypsilanti a few days earlier. She also alleged that drug dealing had taken place at the residence as well. 

The MSP Emergency Support Team, Strike Team Investigative Narcotics Group, an MSP canine, MSP Houghton Lake Post and Crawford County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at the residence and arrested Jarrell and Kobel. 

Jarrell is charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct first degree, one count of unlawful imprisonment and habitual offender fourth offense. The CSC charges are felonies each carrying a life sentence, while the unlawful imprisonment charge is a felony carrying up to 15 years in prison and/or $20,000 in fines. Jarrell’s bond was set at $100,000, 10 percent cash surety. 

Kobel is also charged with one count of unlawful imprisonment and a habitual offender third offense. His bond was set at $25,000, 10 percent cash surety. 

Both Jarrell and Kobel are lodged at the Crawford County Jail. Their next scheduled court appearance is on Jan. 28, 2020 at 1 p.m.
