Alternative Educational Academy of Ogemaw County held its commencement ceremony June 6 at Knights of Columbus Hall in West Branch.
“This school was chartered in 2014 as a way to give educational options to students in Ogemaw County and the surrounding areas who needed a different way to finish high school,” AEA director Tina Williams said. “An alternative.”
Williams introduced the graduates of the Class of 2024.
“The right to call themselves graduates was a choice,” she said. “They chose to meet each personal challenge that could have stopped them from reaching this goal. They chose to stick with school when it may have seemed easier give up.”
The students of AEA have one thing in common. “They need a fresh start, an alternative. We strive to give each and every student just that,” Williams said. “AEA offers online education with in-person teacher support. Our mission has always been to be flexible, supportive and innovative in our approach to education.”
Williams then addressed the graduates, giving them four points to ponder:
• Learning is a lifelong journey. Be curious. Be open to new experiences. Never stop learning.
• Embrace your individuality. All that you are and all that you will be because you have something special to bring to this world that nobody else can bring.
• Never underestimate the power of community. Continue to lean on your community, Be a person someone can lean on, too, because we’re better and stronger together.
• Believe in your potential. Keep setting your goals high.
Graduation from AEA is the realization of a goal and the promise of continued help.
“You’ve got what it takes to realize your dreams,” Williams said. “If you ever need a reminder, come back and visit us at the AEA and we’ll be happy to help.”
