The West Branch Little League 8–10-year-old All-Star team won the 2024 District 8 championship. The tournament was played in West Branch, July 15-18.

Tyson Little is the head coach of the All-Star Team. He was assisted by Nick Thorson and Rob Goulette. Gaylord, Traverse City, Alpena and Boyne City also competed in District 8.

“We ended up playing Traverse City, beat them the first time,” Little said. “We played Gaylord the second game and beat them, and we ended up playing Traverse City again for the district championship.”

The game was close going into the final inning.

“We were losing 2-1 going into the last inning,” Little said. “We came back and beat them 6-2, I think it was.”

Little coached one of five teams in the 8-10 age group during the regular Little League season. He also serves on the Little League board.

“I’ve been coaching for four years now,” Little said. “I’ve only been on the board for two years.” He’s also a Little League dad. “My youngest will be ten in October.”

At the beginning of the season, the coaches divide the kids into teams of 11 or 12.

“We had some kids who never even played baseball before,” Little said. “It’s always a learning experience. It makes a good experience.”

During the season, coaches keep track of talented players.

“We get together at the end of the year and put our lists together,” Little said. “We take twelve of the best kids. Most of the kids on the all-star team, they know what they’re doing.”

Little recognized 10-year-old Tayan Wangler for his positive impact and high spirit.

“He’s a team leader,” Litle said. “He brings the team up.”

After winning the district championship, the West Branch All-Stars attended the regional tournament held July 26-31 at Ishpeming. The team didn’t get a win, but Little was impressed by the support he encountered.

“We had people saying, ‘Good job we’re rooting for you. You play great baseball for your age.’ We didn’t even know these people,” Little said. “It was awesome. It was definitely a great experience.”
